I would overhaul the entire UI, specifically with the following changes in mind:
- Bindable keyboard shortcuts for every action/button in the Overview, as well as the right-click menu, and these would be unrestricted shortcuts, not just limited to a combo of CTRL-, Alt-, or Shift- keys (we'd have to press some key to start chatting, or click the chat box, I realize that).
- Let players resize and move all UI elements, including the HUD, the overview, the relative position of the guns/modules to the HUD (I want the guns to be lined up vertically, f.ex., if I move the HUD to the far right), and the relative positions of the various sections of the Overview.
- Revamp the chat system so we can put multiple channels in the same window (local+corp+/tell), and also integrate combat log messages into a (scrolling) chat window, similar to how other MMOG's are doing it. I know the combat log is there; it sucks. Also let players minimize the typing box at the bottom of chat windows, resize it to a height of one line of text, and/or reposition it around/in relation to the chat window so it can be at the top edge of the window for example.
- Revamp the status effect / combat messages system so that text appears in the log indicating who's jamming/doing EW and with what strength, as well as the total strength on the ship from all the enemies combined, a countdown of all the timers, and better messages for everything that's happening to your ship. Let us color-code the various combat messages, reduce them to brief versions, and check/uncheck whether we want to see each category and in which window.
- Add a "What's this? (?)" button to the toolbar, so that you click on the ? button then click on anything, and it'll pop up a description with what that item is or what that UI element is, and a brief tutorial on how it function. Integrate the tutorial/help system into the game a little bit.
- Fix the calculator so that if you type in 5/0 it doesn't buzz, give an error, stop working, and then crash the server like it did yesterday.
